A washing machine hose is the least glamorous part in the laundry room, right up until it bursts. Supply hoses sit under full mains pressure 24 hours a day whether the machine is running or not, and a split hose keeps pouring until someone turns the valve off. The fix is cheap: a pair of braided stainless hoses costs less than a takeaway, takes fifteen minutes to fit, and should be replaced roughly every five years. If yours are older than that, or you cannot remember fitting them, replace them. If you want to go one step further, the last three picks on this list turn the water off for you.

1. K&J Premium 6ft Stainless Steel Hoses: Best Overall
Best features: Braided stainless sheath over a burst-resistant core, hot and cold pair, 6-foot length. 4.7 stars from more than 4,000 reviews, the largest review base on this list.
These have been the top pick here for years and nothing has come along to displace them. The construction is what you want in a supply hose: a stainless braid that contains the pressurised core so a failure shows up as a weep rather than a burst, and enough length to reach an offset valve without strain. If you want one pair for one machine and do not want to think about it again for five years, this is the pair.
2. Beaquicy 6ft Braided Stainless Hoses: Best Value
Best features: Braided stainless steel, red and blue striping for hot and cold, 3/4-inch fittings, 6-foot length, ten years of after-sales support promised by the maker. 4.7 stars from about 1,000 buyers.
Nearly identical construction to the K&J pair, braided stainless over a reinforced core with colour-coded stripes so you cannot cross hot and cold, at a lower price. The trade-off is a much shorter track record on Amazon, which is why it sits second rather than first. If you are replacing hoses on several machines, or on a rental where you want the job done properly but cheaply, this is the one to buy in bulk.
3. GE PM14X10005 4ft Stainless Hoses: Best Name Brand
Best features: Made by an appliance manufacturer, lead-free stainless braid with a protective polymer coating, rated to 1,600 psi burst strength on the listing, 4-foot length with four washers in the box. 4.7 stars from about 650 buyers.
If you would rather buy hoses from a company that builds washers, GE’s 4-foot stainless pair is the one. The shorter length suits the standard hookup where the valves sit directly behind the machine, without leaving coils of slack to kink, and the polymer coating over the braid is there to stop the laundry-room mix of detergent and damp from corroding the steel. GE says the install takes 15 to 30 minutes with basic tools.
4. 6ft Stainless Hoses with 90-Degree Elbow: Best for Tight Spaces
Best features: 90-degree elbow at one end, no-lead fittings, rubber inner tube under a stainless braid, 3/4-inch FHT connections, 6-foot length. 4.7 stars from about 740 buyers.
The elbow is the difference between a washer that sits close to the wall and one that sticks half a foot into the room. A straight hose has to make a sharp bend right at the connection, and that bend is where straight hoses fail in closets and stacked installations. This pair puts the bend in the fitting instead, so the hose itself runs flat. If your machine lives in a cupboard, under a counter, or in a stacked pair, buy elbowed hoses.
5. Eastman 5ft Hoses with Elbows: Plumber’s Pick
Best features: Four-layer construction, a PVC core with braided nylon reinforcement and a vinyl shell under a grade 304 stainless steel braid; nickel-plated brass nuts and stainless ferrules, 90-degree elbows, 5-foot length, rated to 1,500 psi on the listing. 4.7 stars from more than 3,200 buyers.
Eastman supplies the plumbing trade, and this pair has more layers than anything else on the list: the nylon reinforcement and the vinyl shell restrain the core, and the stainless braid on the outside takes the abrasion. It has thousands of good reviews over many years. The elbows and the 5-foot length, between the usual 4 and 6, make it the right choice for an awkward hookup. Long-running, widely stocked, and the pair a plumber is most likely to have on the van.
6. Techecook 4ft Premium Stainless Hoses: Short Runs
Best features: Braided stainless, red and blue lined pair, fits standard household connections, 4-foot length, ten-year guarantee from the maker. 4.5 stars from about 1,400 buyers.
Another well-reviewed budget pair in the shorter 4-foot length, for the common case where the supply valves sit directly behind the machine and a 6-foot hose would only add loops. Standard fittings; the maker says the install needs a pair of pliers. The 4.5-star average is a shade below the rest of the list; as with any hose, check that the rubber washers are seated in the nuts before you tighten.
7. Yejesiy 4ft Stainless Hoses: Cheapest Stainless Pair
Best features: Two-ply PVC core under a stainless braid, brass nuts, red and blue pair, 3/4-inch fittings, 4-foot length, 30-day money-back guarantee. 4.7 stars from about 1,100 buyers, and currently the fastest-selling hose on this list.
The lowest-priced stainless pair we would put on a machine, and at the time of writing the one Amazon buyers are choosing most often. There is nothing fancy about it: braided steel, colour coding, standard fittings, which is exactly what a washer hose should be. At this price there is no argument left for keeping a ten-year-old rubber hose in service.
8. Elyfree 13ft Washer Drain Hose: The Drain Side
Best features: 13-foot flexible corrugated polypropylene drain hose, four connector-head sizes from 3/4 inch to 1.5 inches, tool-free push fit with a clamp for extra security. 4.5 stars from about 340 buyers.
Supply hoses get the attention, but a cracked drain hose makes the same puddle, one load at a time. This universal hose reaches a distant standpipe or sink, ships with four connector sizes so it fits most front-loaders, and the body is sold as ultra-flexible for routing around corners. It is worth keeping one on the shelf for the day the original splits, because that day is always a Sunday.
Flood protection: three ways to turn the water off automatically
New hoses reduce the risk; they do not remove it. A hose can still fail, a machine’s own inlet valve can stick open, and either one will run at mains pressure until somebody notices. The devices below sit between the wall valves and the machine (or on the main supply) and close the water as soon as a sensor gets wet (E-SDS quotes two seconds; the other two makers do not state a time). They cost more than every hose on this page put together, and they are still cheaper than a new floor.
9. FloodStop Washing Machine Leak Detector Kit: Automatic Shut-Off Without an App
Best features: Two motorised full-port brass ball valves for the hot and cold lines with 90-degree outlets, a control unit with audible and visual alarms, a wired water sensor, plug-in power with optional AA battery backup, rated to 140 psi working pressure, lead-free to NSF 61, ICC-ES listed, and sold as complying with the IPC, IRC and UPC plumbing codes. 4.4 stars from about 400 buyers.
FloodStop is the purpose-built answer: the valves screw onto your existing wall taps, your hoses screw onto the valves, and the water sensor goes behind the machine. When the sensor gets wet, both valves close and the alarm sounds. There is no app, no hub and no Wi-Fi to fail, which is either the point or the drawback depending on how you feel about smart-home gear. The maker says a typical install takes about 15 minutes. It is the most expensive item on this page and the one we would fit in a laundry room above a finished ceiling.
10. YoLink Leak Detection and Shut-Off Starter Kit: Smart Shut-Off for the Whole House
Best features: Three wireless leak sensors, a valve controller with an EVO valve operator that fits onto your existing shut-off valve, and a hub; long-range LoRa radio between devices, direct device-to-device shut-off that the maker says keeps working through a power loss or network disruption, alerts by app, text or email. 4.7 stars from about 500 buyers.
Where FloodStop protects one appliance, YoLink protects the house: the operator goes onto an existing shut-off valve, usually the main, and the three sensors go wherever water tends to appear, behind the washer, under the water heater, by the dishwasher. No pipes are cut; the maker’s pitch is that the operator fits over your existing valve and turns it. Alerts arrive by SMS, app or email through the hub; the maker says the sensors and valve controller talk directly, so the shut-off itself does not depend on the hub, the internet or mains power. The best-reviewed device in this section, and the one to choose if you already own other smart-home kit.
11. E-SDS Leak Detector with Shut-Off Valve: Budget Automatic Shut-Off
Best features: A single 3/4-inch NPT brass motorised ball valve, a control unit with an 80 dB alarm and LED indicators, one sensor probe on a 19.7-foot cable, manual open, close and reset buttons. 4.3 stars from about 100 buyers.
The cheapest way to get an automatic shut-off, with one honest caveat: the valve is threaded NPT, not garden-hose thread, so it is meant to be plumbed into the supply line rather than screwed onto a washer tap. That makes it a job for someone comfortable with pipe fittings, or a plumber. Once it is in, the logic is the same as FloodStop’s: probe gets wet, valve closes within a couple of seconds, alarm sounds. The review base is small, so treat the rating as provisional.

Buyer’s guide
Braided versus plain rubber
A braided hose has a woven stainless steel sheath that contains the pressurised core. When the core ages, a braided hose tends to weep at a fitting rather than split open. A plain rubber hose has nothing containing it, so it fails all at once. Rubber costs a few dollars less and that is its only argument. Unless the machine’s manual specifically requires rubber, buy braided.
Get the length right
Measure from the wall valve to the machine inlet and buy the shortest hose that reaches without pulling tight. Extra length becomes loops behind the machine that trap heat and kink. Four feet suits valves directly behind the washer, six feet covers offset valves or a machine that has to be pulled out for access, and five-foot pairs like the Eastman split the difference. If you need more than six feet, buy a purpose-made long hose rather than joining two.
Elbows for tight installs
If the washer lives in a closet, under a counter or in a stacked pair, choose hoses with a 90-degree elbow at the machine end. The elbow removes the sharp bend that stresses a straight hose and lets the machine sit closer to the wall.
Replace on a schedule, and turn the valves off
Rubber washers harden and cores fatigue whether or not the hose looks tired. Replace supply hoses roughly every five years, write the install date on the hose with a marker so the next person knows, inspect the fittings once a year for rust, bulges or damp, and shut both wall valves before a holiday. A shut-off device from the section above does the last part for you.
Which shut-off device
FloodStop if you want the washer protected with no app and no plumbing beyond the taps. YoLink if you want the whole house covered and want app, text or email alerts. E-SDS if budget matters most and you, or your plumber, are happy to fit an NPT valve into the line. None of them replaces new hoses; they are the backstop for the day the hoses fail anyway.
FAQs
Are stainless steel washer hoses really better?
Yes. The braided sheath prevents the sudden bursts that plain rubber hoses are known for, and stainless tolerates hot water and pressure spikes better over time. Every supply hose on this list is stainless-braided.
How often should washing machine hoses be replaced?
About every five years regardless of appearance, and immediately if you see bulging, corrosion at the fittings, or moisture around a connection.
Are washing machine hoses universal?
Nearly all US washers use 3/4-inch garden-hose-thread connections at both ends, so every supply hose above fits. Check the manual only if the machine is imported or very old.
Do I need special hoses for hot water?
No. Every supply hose listed is sold as a hot-and-cold pair; the red and blue striping is labelling so you connect each hose to the right valve.
Will an automatic shut-off valve stop a burst hose?
It stops the water once the sensor gets wet. What ends up on the floor is whatever came out in that time, a bucketful rather than a night’s worth. That is the whole case for fitting one.
